Here at Team Ake & Humphris, we've all been jabbed and we are delighted to announce that we are starting to nudge back to “business as usual”. We're looking at how we might do wine tastings again. Our wholesale arm has been super busy stocking the bars and restaurants we look after and the shops are still nice and busy too!

A few things to look out for on the horizon include...

Spanish Wine Week, Rosé Day, a Spring Sale and two Bank Holiday weekends. (Not forgetting that Father’s Day will soon be here too!)

We remain extremely grateful for the support all of our customers have shown us in these testing times and are happy to provide you with our lovely products in whichever way makes you feel most comfortable. Find us in our stores and online, delivering locally and also nationally. We are also offering a very popular click and collect service.

Spanish Wine Week

Spain has a special place in our hearts at Ake and Humphris which is reflected by the eagerness with which we thrust bottles into the hands of our customers with the cheerful cry of it’s not just Rioja. Sherry may have kept your Nan happy it’s more likely that crisp and refreshing summery whites like Albarino, Godello, Viura or Verdejo find their way into the Fridge today. The Rain may fall mainly on the plain, but the sun it seems shines everywhere so that ripe and powerful reds from Tempranillo can be found in Rioja, Castilla, Toro and Ribera Del Duero while many local grape varieties remain in other parts of Spain. It is this adoption of the best of modern winemaking while retaining a proudly independent Spirit which continues to celebrate its unique culinary heritage that is perhaps Spain’s greatest achievement. Come and explore the best of Spain this week with our helpful staff at Ake and Humphris in Collingham and Harrogate.

Aresan Bourbon Cask £11.99

Phil says: We loved this big brute with a sweet smoky sophisticated side perfect for BBQ ribs.

Manzanos Graciano £10.99

Des says: This is a great value for money wine from a grape that had all but vanished from most of Rioja excellent dark berry fruit and classic Rioja savour.

Eneriz Reserva Tinto (not on website yet) £9.99

Phil says: Redcurrant and black cherry fruit backed up with soft vanilla oak lushness in the Rioja model from Navarra so better value. Great with Roast Squash stuffed with Spinach and blue cheese.

Borsao Zarihs £18.49

Phil says: Borsao wines are always great value; this Shiraz has been made in collaboration with an Australian winemaker as part of an ongoing project to promote innovation and ambition - oh, and it tastes awesome.

New Opening Hours from May 4th

In line with easing of retail restrictions, our first step forward is to extend our opening times slightly for both our Harrogate and Collingham stores.

From May 4th 2021 we will be open:

Tuesday to Saturday

11am to 7pm

Please note our social distancing and COVID secure policies remain in place at both our stores:

Only 2 customers in store at any one time
Please remain 2 metres apart
Please sanitise your hands before entry
Please wear a face covering (unless medically exempt)

We will review all of this ongoing and act in accordance to Government guidance to provide a safe environment in which to shop.

By popular demand, we continue to offer free local home delivery to customers who live near our shops in Harrogate and Collingham. To qualify for this just order wine and beer to the value of £50 or more and we'll be happy to deliver to you free of charge. Get 6 or more wines and you'll receive our case discount too.

Deliveries further afield are still going strong too - many deliveries to York, London, Scotland and for small quantities locally too (like a single bottle gift), our delivery charge remains at the same level as in previous years - just £8.99.

Great local brewery: Turning Point Brewery from Knaresborough

They champion “Hops, good music and space travel!” and have been growing from strength to strength since they opened for business in 2017.

To us they represent great contemporary craft beer making with some interesting twists along the way.

We are especially grateful to Turning Point for supporting us with consistent supply during the “tricky for beer” lockdown one last year. When some other beer suppliers changed our Ts and Cs overnight making it hard to get stock, Turning Point were one of the local breweries that made it easier, not harder to keep great beer on our shelves.

Currently we have 10 different brews by them, the crown jewel being their “Disco King” Pale Ale which has a similar style to the brands of Pale Ale you may well know in the grocers but drinking cleaner, purer and way more exciting.
