We're pleased as punch to have done it again, beating off stiff competition from hundreds of wine retailers across the country, including much larger competitors from London and beyond.
You might ask, "What was all the fuss about?"
Event organisers, Wines of Germany confirmed that participants around the country from Inverness to Edinburgh, London, Cardiff and Swansea and more, all competed to win the coveted 31 Days of German Riesling titles of Retailer and Restaurant of the Year, as well as funds towards new German wine listings. They were looking for original ideas, diverse wine lists and social media reach throughout the month of July.
With retail shops in Harrogate and Collingham, Ake & Humphris - truly independent Yorkshire wine merchants - were delighted to have ticked all the boxes two years in a row!
"Ake and Humphris for using an enormous amount of different wines and reaching out to consumers through various events"
So, how did we do it?
Our month of German Riesling celebrations started on a high with well-known wine writer, Oz Clarke and the renowned Armonico Consort inviting guests to “drink to music” here in Harrogate enjoying wines supplied by us!
We went on to showcase our extensive range of German Rieslings throughout the month, with customer tastings in-store, ending on a high with our “Wurzelwerk Tasting - An Exploration of Terroir”. The box set of nine wines we opened sells for over $1,500 in the states and came about as the result of a fascinating wine experiment.
Wurzelwerk features the work of four highly respected European winemakers who agreed to send each other grapes from their greatest vineyards to make wine in each other’s wineries. This was to explore Johannes Hasselbach’s hypothesis that the yeasts found in the winery were different to those in the vineyard and they both have a profound, yet different, effect on the finished wine. This tasting offered the unprecedented opportunity to try nine unique and exceptionally rare wines from three great wineries, side by side. What a treat that was!
Whilst it might appear surprising that we have beaten off the competition, this second win is a reflection of the passion and knowledge of the small, yet experienced team who work here. Martin Jeffery, Managing Director, commented, “The whole team is absolutely delighted to have won the competition again; Ake & Humphris is all about authentic wines and we really enjoy sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm with customers.
"This award is recognition that we really know our Rieslings and provide not just the wines but the background stories too. Riesling is a favourite grape for both Des Tinline and myself; not only do we both travel regularly to Germany to visit wineries, Des worked in the vineyards of Mosel and I did my apprenticeship at a winery in Germany – giving us both a great understanding of the different terroirs, and an appreciation of what can be achieved with Riesling.”
Whether you are a Riesling enthusiast or just a wine enthusiast – we look forward to extending you a warm welcome and sharing our wines and knowledge with you.
